Job Position: Fleet Head of Department (Fleet HOD)

Role Summary

  • We are seeking an experienced and strategic Fleet Head of Department to lead and manage our entire fleet operations.
  • The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing vehicle acquisition, maintenance, driver management, compliance, cost control, and operational efficiency across the organization.
  • This is a senior leadership role requiring a hands-on professional with a proven track record of optimizing fleet performance, reducing costs, and ensuring safety and regulatory compliance.

Key Responsibilities
Fleet Strategy & Operations Management:

  • Develop and implement fleet strategies, policies, and procedures to optimize vehicle utilization, reliability, and efficiency.
  • Oversee daily fleet operations, including vehicle deployment, routing, scheduling, and logistics coordination.
  • Ensure timely delivery of goods, services, or personnel in line with organizational objectives.

Vehicle Maintenance & Asset Management:

  • Establish and manage preventive and corrective maintenance programs to minimize vehicle downtime and extend asset lifespan.
  • Oversee vehicle inspections, servicing, repairs, and warranty management.
  • Maintain accurate records of vehicle history, mileage, fuel consumption, and maintenance costs.

Driver & Staff Management:

  • Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate drivers, mechanics, and fleet support staff.
  • Implement driver performance monitoring systems, including telematics and GPS tracking.
  • Promote safe driving practices and conduct regular driver training and refresher courses.

Compliance & Regulatory Adherence:

  • Ensure all fleet vehicles are roadworthy, properly insured, and fully documented (vehicle registration, licenses, permits, etc.).
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations, including FRSC, NTSB, DOT, and local traffic laws.
  • Manage accident reporting, investigation, and claims processes.

Budgeting & Cost Control:

  • Prepare and manage the fleet budget, including fuel, maintenance, insurance, and procurement costs.
  • Implement cost-saving initiatives, such as fuel efficiency programs, route optimization, and vendor negotiations.
  • Monitor and report on fleet financial performance, identifying variances and recommending corrective actions.

Procurement & Disposal:

  • Manage the acquisition, leasing, or disposal of vehicles, ensuring cost-effectiveness and alignment with operational needs.
  • Negotiate with vendors, suppliers, and OEMs for competitive pricing on vehicles, parts, and services.
  • Ensure timely replacement of ageing or high-maintenance vehicles.

Technology & Data Management:

  • Oversee the implementation and management of fleet management software, GPS tracking, and telematics systems.
  • Leverage data analytics to monitor driver behavior, fuel consumption, maintenance trends, and overall fleet performance.
  • Prepare and present detailed fleet performance reports to senior management and stakeholders.

Health, Safety & Environment (HSE):

  • Enforce strict adherence to health, safety, and environmental standards across all fleet operations.
  • Conduct risk assessments and implement safety protocols to reduce accidents and liabilities.
  • Ensure all vehicles meet environmental emissions standards.

Candidate Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 8 years of progressive experience in fleet management, logistics, or transport operations, with at least 4 years in a senior management or leadership capacity.
  • Proven track record of managing large and diverse vehicle fleets (e.g., trucks, buses, heavy equipment, or light vehicles).
  • Master's degree (MBA or MSc in relevant field) is an added advantage.
  • Professional certifications such as CILT (Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport), CPFP (Certified Professional Fleet Manager), or equivalent are highly desirable.
  • Strong knowledge of fleet management software, GPS tracking systems, and telematics.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite, particularly Excel for data analysis and reporting.
  • Understanding of vehicle mechanics, maintenance practices, and lifecycle cost analysis.
  • Knowledge of Nigerian regulatory frameworks (FRSC, NTSB, etc.).
  • Strong leadership, team management, and people development skills.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
  • Outstanding communication, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Willingness to travel as required.
  • Must reside in or be willing to relocate to the specified location.
